Kenya — MetaTrader 5 (MT5) — the Words the Terminal Uses

MetaTrader 5 names things its own way. Order, deal, position and ticket are four different objects inside the terminal, and the words people use around an account do not map onto them one for one.

MetaTrader 5 uses a vocabulary of its own, and most of the confusion around it comes from words that look like everyday words. An order is an instruction that has not happened yet, a deal is a single execution, a position is the exposure left open once that execution has gone through, and a ticket is a number that differs between the order and the deal that filled it. Close applies to a position and delete applies to a pending order; the two are never offered for the same row.

Three places the mismatch costs most

Signing in. The terminal asks for a login, and the login it wants is the trading account number — the digits issued when that account was created. The address used to reach the Personal Area is a separate credential and will be refused. Nothing about the refusal explains which of the two was expected, so the same attempt tends to be repeated several times before the distinction lands.

Cancelling something. A pending order is deleted; an open position is closed. Reaching for the wrong one has two very different failures — removing a plan that was meant to stay, or leaving exposure open in the belief that it has gone. The menu is the safeguard here, because it only ever offers the verb that fits the row, which also makes a missing Delete a piece of information rather than a fault.

Counting. One filled instruction leaves three traces. The same activity can be read as orders, as deals or as positions, and each reading returns a different number of rows. Comparing a count taken under one view with a count taken under another is the quickest way to conclude that something is wrong with an account when nothing is.

Why MetaTrader 5 splits what MetaTrader 4 kept together

In the older terminal one word did most of the work: an order was the instruction, the fill and the resulting exposure all at once. That is comfortable while everything is a single pair opened and closed in one go, and it stops being comfortable as soon as an instruction is filled in parts or a position is built up over several entries.

Splitting the three apart is what lets partial fills and partial closes be described precisely. The price of that precision is exactly the vocabulary problem on this page: three rows where a person expects one, and three numbers where a person expects a single reference.

Reading a row before you act on it

  1. Note which view the row is on. One view holds what is live; another holds what is finished, and the same event appears in both under different names.
  2. Check whether the row has a price it is waiting for. If it does, it is a pending order and the verb is delete.
  3. If it has a profit or loss that keeps changing, it is a position and the verb is close.
  4. Read the number as a ticket for that row only — the ticket on the order and the ticket on the deal that filled it are different numbers.
  5. Read size in lots before comparing it with anything written down elsewhere.

None of this changes with the account type: the words belong to the terminal, not to the account.

The same thing, said two ways

The everyday wordWhat MetaTrader 5 calls itWhy the two are not the same
Your account numberLoginThe number identifies the trading account; the address used to reach the Personal Area is a different credential and the terminal will not accept it
A tradeDealOne execution. A single instruction can produce more than one of them
An open tradePositionThe exposure left open once a deal has gone through — the row that still carries risk
An order you left in placePending orderAn instruction waiting at a price; it carries no exposure at all until it triggers
The reference numberTicketThere is one for the order and a different one for the deal that filled it
What is in the accountBalance, equity, free marginBalance is closed results only, equity adds floating profit and loss, free margin is what remains available to open with
How muchVolume, in lotsSize is stated in lots rather than in the currency of the account
Cancel itDeleteApplies to a pending order that has not triggered
Close itCloseApplies to an open position and to nothing else

The left column is how people describe things out loud; the middle column is what the terminal will actually respond to.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an order, a deal and a position in MetaTrader 5?
An order is an instruction that has not been carried out yet. A deal is a single execution of one. A position is the exposure left open once that execution has gone through. One instruction can therefore leave three rows behind it, with three different ticket numbers.
Why does MetaTrader 5 offer Delete on one row and Close on another?
Delete removes a pending order that has not triggered, and Close ends an open position. The two verbs describe different objects, so the terminal only shows the one that fits the row in front of you.
Which login does MetaTrader 5 want?
The trading account number issued when that account was created. The address used to reach the Personal Area is a separate credential and will not be accepted by the terminal.
What is the difference between balance, equity and free margin?
Balance counts closed results only. Equity is the balance plus whatever profit or loss is currently floating. Free margin is the part of equity still available to open something new with.
Why does the same trade appear more than once?
Because the same activity can be read as orders, as deals or as positions, and one filled instruction produces a row in each reading. The count differs by view, not by what happened.
Is volume in MetaTrader 5 stated in lots or in currency?
In lots. A size worked out in the currency of the account has to be converted to lots before it goes into the volume field.
